BURSARY AWARDS FOR UKM LAW STUDENTS

24th December 2013 — With their semester exams just days away, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) final year Law students, Ms Fu Swee Theeng and Mr. Chan Ching Eong took a quick break from their revision to dash over to The Intermark Kuala Lumpur, to receive their YAYASAN TUN ABDUL HAMID LAW BURSARY AWARD 2013 from YTAH Director, Puan Ellina binti Abdul Majid. Each award carried a monetary value of RM2000.00, which both Swee Theeng and Chan Ching Eong agreed would come in useful in the purchase of study materials for the remainder of their course.

Swee Theeng’s decision to study Law is an inspiring and motivational one. “I’m from Pahang, where my family has a fruit farm. As a young girl, I would go with other family members after school to our stall to sell our fruits, and it was kind of embarassing, when I happened to see my classmates. That’s when I told myself I wanted to do something nobler when I grew up, not just sell fruits. So I studied as hard as I could and got a place at university to do Law.”

For Chan Ching Eong, his interest in the Law and legal rights came about as a result of injustices arising when his family business ran into problems. “It’s always good to know one’s rights so people don’t take advantage of you.”

Chan Ching Eong, who hails from Kelantan, described his home state as being very scenic and tranquil, with beautiful beaches. The rigours of the Law degree course, however, has meant that he seldom gets to visit his hometown and family, except for very special occasions, like Chinese New Year. The same applies to Swee Theeng but then it’s all for a good cause, to give them a better future in the competitive world that we live in.
